Principle of Hydraulic Conductivity Measurement

Hydraulic conductivity is a variable associated with the ease of water movement, expressing the physical structural quality of soil. Water movement in soil is directly influenced by macroporosity, varying according to the volume, size, continuity, tortuosity, and interconnection of the soil's porous system.

Hydraulic conductivity is inversely proportional to penetration resistance. Soil compaction reorganizes particles, increasing density due to reduced soil volume and air expulsion from pores. Soil compaction reduces the volume of macropores. With this reduction, soil microporosity increases, leading to greater water storage in the soil. In this way, soil hydraulic conductivity can be used to characterize abrupt changes in macroporosity.
