THC & Hydrocarbon Analyzers

About THC & Hydrocarbon Analyzers

ES Canada offers portable total hydrocarbon (THC) analyzers with flame ionization detection (FID) for gas measurement applications. The range includes the ZR-3130 portable THC analyzer with leak detection and the ZR-7221 portable stack THC analyzer with H-FID.

These instruments address distinct measurement tasks. Hydrocarbon leak investigations and THC measurement in stack gas require different sampling arrangements and operating conditions. The selected instrument should be assessed against the application rather than chosen solely because it uses FID technology.

Portable THC analyzers available

  • ZR-3130: a portable THC analyzer with FID leak detection for applications requiring hydrocarbon measurement and leak investigation.
  • ZR-7221: a portable stack THC analyzer with H-FID for stack gas measurement applications.

What does a total hydrocarbon analyzer measure?

A THC analyzer reports a total hydrocarbon measurement according to the instrument's specified detection method and calibration basis. This is a different analytical objective from identifying and separately quantifying individual hydrocarbon compounds. Check the reported units, calibration gas and supported measurement range for the selected model before comparing results or defining a measurement procedure.

Leak detection or stack measurement?

For leak investigations, establish the sampling location and the need to move between measurement points. For stack applications, establish the gas temperature and sampling conditions, together with any requirements for the probe, sampling line and sample handling. Verify which components and operating conditions are supported by each instrument configuration.

Typical applications

  • Portable total hydrocarbon measurement in gas samples
  • Hydrocarbon leak detection with a suitable FID instrument
  • THC measurement in stack gas with a suitable stack analyzer
  • Technical investigations requiring comparison of hydrocarbon readings at selected sampling points

How to choose a THC analyzer

Compare the measurement objective, expected concentration, detection range, response requirements and calibration procedure. Review sample handling, operating environment, portability and the supplies required by the selected FID system. Check the relevant product specifications before assuming compatibility with a particular gas stream or measurement method.

ES Canada provides product selection support for portable hydrocarbon analysis, helping technical users distinguish leak detection requirements from stack THC measurement needs.
